REPELLING INSECTS THE HEALTHY WAY WITH ST. ANN'S INSECT REPELLENT
Mosquitoes and other insects have complex ways of detecting hosts. Most mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk, but there are some that seek hosts during the day too. We can avoid being bitten by making sure we aren't attracting insects, luring them elsewhere, using a repellent, and avoiding actions that diminish the effectiveness of the repellent.

Some Helpful Hints
The following provides a checklist of what to avoid or how to direct insects elsewhere.
- Avoid dark clothes. Dark clothes and foliage are attractive to them.
- Light a candle. We give off more carbon dioxide when we are hot or have been exercising. Burning a candle as another source of carbon dioxide that will draw insects way from us.
- Avoid floral or fruity fragrances
- Avoid perfumes, hair products, and sunscreens with floral fragrances. This includes fabric softeners.
- When we exercise or eat certain foods (salty or high in potassium) we release more lactic acid which attracts mosquitoes.
- Mosquitoes are attracted to perspiring skin because of the skin’s own chemicals and humidity. Small amounts of moisture (e.g., moist plants or mud puddles) will draw mosquitoes. Standing water also allows mosquitoes to reproduce.
- Dilution from rain, perspiration, or swimming
- Absorption into the skin
- Evaporation caused by wind or high temperatures
